EMLM strike end not in sight

The Rep - - NEWS -

THE workers’ strike, headed by Samwu at the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, is continuing.

The Rep reported (“Municipal strike”, August 4) that workers had downed tools in a demand for back pay over 10 months due on the benchmarking of employees.

In June, the South African Local Government Bargaining Council found in favour of the workers but, according to an earlier statement by Samwu Chris Hani regional secretary Mongameli Mancam, EMLM indicated it did not have the funds and that payment would be made at the end of last month.

When this did not happen, workers embarked on the strike.

EMLM spokesman Fundile Feketshane confirmed this week that engagement between the municipality and workers were continuing in finding a solution.

Once a resolution had been reached, EMLM would communicate with the media, Feketshane said.
