CONCERN OVER ABSENT COUNCILLORS
THE poor attendance of some councillors at council meetings took centre stage at the Chris Hani District Municipality’s ordinary council meeting on Wednesday.
The meeting took place at the Gali Thembani Youth Care Centre.
A report tabled during the meeting indicated that only six out of 42 councillors had attended all council meetings during the 2016/2017 financial year. A total of 28 had not attended up to three council meetings – with only 24 of them tendering apologies – while seven had not attended more than three meetings. One councillor had only attended the inaugural council meeting.
Speaker Mxolisi Koyo said the rules and ethics committee was looking into the behaviour of councillors who attended a meeting, missed two and then attended the next meeting.
He said councillors should not try and find loopholes for not attending meetings, but should ask themselves whether they were indeed representing their communities.
Councillors present at the meeting agreed that action should be taken against councillors who did not attend meetings.
