Bullets fly as suspects try to flee in Cathcart Road

As pedestrians ducked and fled into nearby shops, bullets whizzed down the road as the suspects engaged in gunfire with members of the police following a car chase from Sterkstroom.
Police spokeswoman Captain Namhla Mdleleni said three armed men had entered Pep Stores in Sterkstroom and pointed guns at the staff, demanding money, earlier in the day. The men had fled in a white minibus with a Gauteng registration number.
Police gave chase in the direction of Komani with notification given in a call for backup. The vehicle was cornered in Komani.
The suspects allegedly tried to dump the getaway vehicle in Cathcart Road and flee, firing shots at the police.

An unlicensed firearm, cellular phones and an undisclosed amount of money were recovered. The vehicle was confiscated.
Mdleleni said police were investigating charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.
