Bul­lets fly as sus­pects try to flee in Cath­cart Road


BUL­LETS flew dur­ing the 4.30pm rush hour in Cath­cart Road in the cen­tral busi­ness district dur­ing a shootout be­tween rob­bery sus­pects and the po­lice in Ko­mani on Wed­nes­day.

As pedes­tri­ans ducked and fled into nearby shops, bul­lets whizzed down the road as the sus­pects en­gaged in gun­fire with mem­bers of the po­lice fol­low­ing a car chase from Sterk­stroom.

Po­lice spokes­woman Cap­tain Namhla Mdle­leni said three armed men had en­tered Pep Stores in Sterk­stroom and pointed guns at the staff, de­mand­ing money, ear­lier in the day. The men had fled in a white minibus with a Gaut­eng reg­is­tra­tion num­ber.

Po­lice gave chase in the di­rec­tion of Ko­mani with no­ti­fi­ca­tion given in a call for backup. The ve­hi­cle was cor­nered in Ko­mani.

The sus­pects al­legedly tried to dump the get­away ve­hi­cle in Cath­cart Road and flee, fir­ing shots at the po­lice.

One of the sus­pects was wounded as po­lice re­turned fire and an­other two were also ar­rested.

An un­li­censed firearm, cel­lu­lar phones and an undis­closed amount of money were re­cov­ered. The ve­hi­cle was con­fis­cated.

Mdle­leni said po­lice were in­ves­ti­gat­ing charges of armed rob­bery, at­tempted mur­der, pos­ses­sion of an un­li­censed firearm and pos­ses­sion of sus­pected stolen prop­erty.

The sus­pects will ap­pear be­fore the Sterk­stroom Mag­is­trate’s Court soon.

Clus­ter Com­man­der in Ko­mani, Ma­jor-General Them­bisile Patek­ile, has praised the Crime In­tel­li­gence Gath­er­ing Unit, the K9 Unit, the Sterk­stroom po­lice and the Fly­ing Squad for their con­tri­bu­tion in en­sur­ing the ar­rests.
