Queenstown Girls’ High School’s Teagan Roux did not only do her school and Komani proud, but the whole of SA in the recent World Squash Championships in India and said she gained huge experience about squash.

Teagan, who was ranked fourth in the SA squash team that competed at the World Championships in New Zealand in 2017, through sheer determination and hard work moved up the rankings in 2018 to become No1 in her age group in the country.

“India was a fantastic experience. The culture is such a big part of the country, I am glad I got to experience some of it. I played very well in my matches and gained a lot of experience and knowledge from playing at such a high standard,” Teagan said.

“The competition was very stiff though, with everyone trying to reap the benefits of their hard work. Every match was tough, there were no easy opponents. However, I enjoyed each match, especially the one against an Australian opponent.”

Teagan said the sportsmanship she experienced from her Australian counterpart on and off the court was amazing, along with her getting tips from the Australian coach to improve her game.

“I made quite a few new friends abroad. There were many nights when the teams from different countries would join to play games together which was really lovely. I have learnt that squash is about your skills, fitness and training, but most importantly it is your mental strength and being able to back yourself, plus ability,” Teagan said.

She said the SA team worked together to get everyone’s head into the correct space before their matches by sitting in a quiet room. However, nothing felt as good as coming home and seeing familiar faces.

“Having received so much support from everyone was such a blessing. A huge thank you to everyone who supported me through this venture, plus the people who made the trip possible. It was a fantastic opportunity and I am extremely grateful for it,” Teagan said.
