Ferry cap­tain jailed

THE CAP­TAIN of the South Korean ferry Se­wol was jailed for 36 years yes­ter­day over its sink­ing in April that killed more than 300 pas­sen­gers, mostly school­child­ren. Lee Joon Seok, 69, was con­victed of dere­lic­tion of duty for abandoning the pas­sen­gers, but found not guilty of mur­der at the trial of the sunken ves­sel’s crew in Gwangju. Three other crew mem­bers were sentenced to 15, 20 and 30 years re­spec­tively on re­lated charges.
