Kelly attends first social bash since Senzo’s death
Celeb preens and poses for cameras at the gay-friendly Feather Awards
CONTROVERSY hit the 6th annual gay friendly Feather Awards last night when singer Kelly Khumalo made her first official appearance since the murder of her boyfriend, national soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa.
She arrived early on the red carpet, posing and preening for the cameras in Sandton.
The glow on her face was a far cry from the pale and depressed Khumalo of recent days. She wore a long black dress with a white silhouette down the side that showed off her curvy body.
Khumalo presented the final award of the evening, “Feather of the Year”, which is given to a person who has uplifted the gay and lesbian community.
This year the award went to Shahin Eraf Moonieya.
Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula won Sports Personality of the Year. “Mr Razzmatazz” pipped fellow nominees, cricketer Hashim Amla and previous winner, swimmer Chad le Clos, to the post.
In an amusing turn, Drama Queen of the Year was won by the Generations 16 (the actors who were fired from the soapie) and its creator Mfundi Vundla.
This was for their drama that played out over the wage dispute between the striking cast members and the producers.
The tongue-in-cheek awards were attended by several A-list celebrities – from actors to musicians and fashion designers, some of whom were dressed in the most outrageous designs.
The red carpet was a media frenzy that is only ever rivalled by the South African Music Awards. Continuity presenters Zizo Beda of Selimathunzi, Lalla Hirayama, Lerato Kganyago and Amanda du Pont were all winners on the night.
Beda beat Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to win Role Model of the Year. Vuzu presenter and SA’s Got Talent judge Hirayama and her boyfriend Chris Nkosi won Cutest Couple, while SABC1’s Kganyago won Fag Hag of the Year. Du Pont, an SABC1 gossip show The Real Goboza presenter, bagged the Hot Chick award.
The very happening actor-model-continuity presenter Maps Maponya won the coveted Best Styled Male, with the female equivalent award going to the new face of Legit, vocalist and continuity presenter Nandi Mngoma.
Another favourite in the Feather Awards is Hunk of the Year, which was won by Muvhango’s Nkuli Tshirumbula.
Last night, Mafikizolo raised the roof when they accepted the award in the Best Musician Category.
Hosts on the night were actor Akumzi Jezile and former YOTV presenter and television producer Sade.
There were performances by music impresario Kabomo, songstress Wanda Baloyi, kwaito singer Busiswa and the darling Madame Gigi (Somizi Mhlongo), among others.
