ORSCHE has expanded its Cayenne line up with two new models: a baseline version and the performance-oriented GTS.

They will make their world premieres at next week’s Los Angeles Auto Show but South African buyers can order both models as of now.

The GTS badge hails back to the famous 904 Carrera GTS of 1963, and in 2007 the Cayenne GTS became the first Porsche of the modern era to revive the acronym. In its newest incarnation the Cayenne GTS gets a boosted version of the 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo petrol engine recently introduced in the Cayenne S.

With outputs of 324kW and 600Nm the Cayenne GTS becomes the secondmost powerful derivative in the Cayenne range after the 382kW Cayenne 4.8 Turbo. It has the claimed ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, or a tenth quicker with the optional Sport Chrono package. Top speed is 262 km/h and this SUV comes standard with a sports exhaust system for a distinctive GTS sound.

Cornering ability is enhanced with a Porsche Active Suspension Manage-

Pment (PASM) damping system that has a sporty set-up and a 24mm lower ride height. The GTS also inherits the brakes from the Cayenne Turbo, comprising larger front and rear discs and red-painted callipers.

Matched with the improved power and handling is added visual bling in the form of a Sport Design package with larger air intakes, wheelarch extensions, and black 20” mags in RS Spyder design. Striking black contrasts, including darkened LED rear lights, further bring out this Cayenne’s dark side, while the cabin also gets a sporty styling upgrade. The GTS sells for R1 176 000. For those on more of a budget, the new entry-level Cayenne offers a 220kW/400Nm 3.6-litre V6 naturally aspirated engine for a pricetag of R852 000. It hits 100 in a claimed 7.7 seconds and tops out at 230 km/h, and Porsche reckons it’ll return 9.2l/100 km.

Standard spec on the new baseline Cayenne includes an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission with Auto Stop/Start and coasting functions, bixenon headlights with LED daytime driving lights, a multi-function sports steering wheel with paddle switches, and an automatic boot lid.
