Eight held after mob killing

EIGHT peo­ple were ar­rested yes­ter­day after a mob killed a youth sus­pected of house rob­bery in Protea Glen, Soweto, po­lice said. On Wed­nes­day, a man re­ported a case of theft and house­break­ing to the po­lice and told them he sus­pected an 18-year-old who lived in the area, War­rant Of­fi­cer Kay Makhubela said. “Later in the evening, he went to the boy’s house and took him back to his house. The boy was al­legedly as­saulted by the com­mu­nity.” The teenager was de­clared dead on ar­rival at hos­pi­tal, and the po­lice opened a case of mur­der. Eight peo­ple, in­clud­ing the man whose house was bur­gled, were ar­rested and were ex­pected to ap­pear soon in the Protea Mag­is­trate’s Court. Makhubela said more ar­rests were ex­pected. – Sapa
