UST when Joburg ratepayers begin to think that the billing furore is a thing of the past, comes a rude awakening. A Cheltondale resident got the shock of his life recently when he got a pre-termination notice – a precursor before services are unceremoniously cut off – for being R1.03 million in arrears. He was one of almost 1 000 city residents who were served with such notices – wrongly, as it transpires.
The city revenue department later explained that 9 154 pre-termination notices dated October 30 and 31 were delivered to a number of customers. Out of these, 981 were wrong and shouldn’t have gone out.
While these notices have since been revoked, the council has previously given assurances that billing mistakes were a thing of the past. We live in hope that the council will ensure it treats its customers with respect and gets its house in order.
