Friendly pol­icy draws refugees

SOUTH Africa was one of the big­gest re­cip­i­ents of asy­lum ap­pli­ca­tions in the world thanks to its lib­eral pol­icy on refugees. This was the mes­sage yes­ter­day from Deputy Min­is­ter of Home Af­fairs Fa­tima Cho­han at an in­ter­na­tional law pro­gramme hosted by the UN High Com­mis­sioner for Refugees and the Univer­sity of Cape Town. The fo­cus is on the chal­lenges of refugee pro­tec­tion in Africa. Cho­han said four of the 10 lead­ing refugee-pro­duc­ing coun­tries in the world – So­ma­lia, Su­dan, the DRC and Eritrea – were in Africa. – Lisa Isaacs
