Crash toll rises to seven

THE DEATH toll fol­low­ing an ac­ci­dent near Waverly in Mpumalanga has risen to seven, the provin­cial Com­mu­nity Safety Depart­ment said. Eight oth­ers were se­ri­ously in­jured, while a ninth per­son sus­tained mi­nor in­juries, spokesman Joseph Mabuza said. They were taken to a hos­pi­tal in Eluk­wa­tini. The ac­ci­dent hap­pened at a T-junc­tion on a road be­tween Waverly and the Oshoek bor­der post into Swazi­land early yes­ter­day. Six of those killed were from the bakkie, in­clud­ing the driver. The truck was hit on the side, but the driver was not in­jured, he said. MEC Vusi Shongwe said: “We must work with the gov­ern­ment to erad­i­cate road crashes, which of­ten de­stroy fam­i­lies, with some chil­dren los­ing their par­ents and oth­ers los­ing bread­win­ners.” – Sapa
