Who’s who at the DA’S congress
THIS weekend, the party holds its Gauteng provincial congress in Boksburg. It’s expected to be attended by 1 200 delegates from more than 400 branches.
They’ll be key to the elections for the provincial leadership – a crucial selection for the party which already has its eye on the 2016 municipal elections.
The incumbent provincial leader is John Moodey, a member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) for the past 10 years. The only other contender to the position is Refiloe Nt’sekhe, who became an MPL this year, and is a former Gauteng provincial spokesman and former Ekurhuleni ward councillor.
The role of provincial chair, currently occupied by Mike Moriarty, is uncontested. The position will be occupied by MPL Solly Msimanga, who is the current chairman of the Gauteng North region, Tshwane councillor and a former caucus chair.
Candidates for the deputy chairperson are: MPL Michele Clarke, the current community safety spokesman; Tshwane councillor Hannes Coetzee; councillor Vasco Da Gama, the DA Caucus Leader in Joburg; and Ekurhuleni caucus PR councillor Shelley Loe. – Staff Reporter
