Top job changes at Volk­swa­gen

VOLK­SWA­GEN Group South Africa (VWSA) man­ag­ing di­rec­tor David Pow­els has been ap­pointed pres­i­dent of Volk­swa­gen do Brasil, one of Volk­swa­gen’s big­gest op­er­a­tions out­side of Ger­many. Brazil has a car mar­ket of 3.5 mil­lion units a year and VW is the big­gest man­u­fac­turer, pro­duc­ing more than 700 000 cars a year. Thomas Schäfer, an en­gi­neer who was head of group pro­duc­tion, has been ap­pointed man­ag­ing di­rec­tor of VWSA. Both ap­point­ments are ef­fec­tive from Fe­bru­ary. Pow­els joined VWSA in 1989 in the fi­nance di­vi­sion and has held var­i­ous po­si­tions within the group, in­clud­ing for­eign po­si­tions in fi­nance at Volk­swa­gen and Audi and vi­cepres­i­dent fi­nance and cor­po­rate strat­egy at Volk­swa­gen do Brasil from 2002 to 2007. Schäfer started his work­ing ca­reer at Mercedes Benz in 1994 and moved to a man­age­ment role in South Africa in 1998. – Roy Cokayne
