July up for Best Spon­sor­ship award

THE horserac­ing in­dus­try is toast­ing the in­clu­sion of the Vodacom Dur­ban July as a nom­i­nee for the Best Spon­sor­ship of a Sport Event or Com­pe­ti­tion award at the an­nual Dis­cov­ery Sport In­dus­try Awards.

The 118th run­ning of the Vodacom Dur­ban July on 5 July 2014, an event that is widely recog­nised as Africa's Great­est Horserac­ing Event, was another sell-out suc­cess, en­trench­ing its sta­tus as one of the house­hold names in South African sport­ing and so­cial cir­cles.

The event, pre­sented by Vodacom and Gold Cir­cle, seeks to stay fresh and con­tem­po­rary each year while at the same time stay­ing true to its his­tory and the deeply­rooted tra­di­tions of horserac­ing.

The event has suc­ceeded in evolv­ing in re­cent years into a vi­brant and unique sport­ing and so­cial event that draws its support from a com­plete cross sec­tion of South African com­mu­ni­ties, with an in­creas­ing per­cent­age of race­day fans trav­el­ling from out­side of KwaZulu-Natal to en­joy the an­nual spec­ta­cle.

“The Vodacom Dur­ban July is a piv­otal event for Gold Cir­cle and the horse rac­ing in­dus­try in South Africa,’’ said Gold Cir­cle chair­man Robert Mau­vis.

“With ever in­creas­ing com­pe­ti­tion for the at­ten­tion of sport fans, each event and sport­ing code has to look to it­self to find new ways to re­main at­trac­tive and vi­brant and stand out from the crowd.

“The part­ner­ship be­tween Vodacom and its agency Trinergy and Gold Cir­cle has been able to do this very suc­cess­fully and the event re­mains as cap­ti­vat­ing as it was when it was first run in 1897.’’

Vodacom's Brand Man­ager-Spon­sor­ship & Re­gional Mar­ket­ing, Owen Gan­gulu, said: “Vodacom sought new and in­no­va­tive ways to con­nect with its mar­ket through the Vodacom Dur­ban July.

“It is an ex­hil­a­rat­ing prop­erty to spon­sor as it’s speaks at nu­mer­ous lev­els to a na­tional and in­ter­na­tional au­di­ence fol­low­ing the sport­ing, so­cial and fash­ion di­men­sions of this event. Each of th­ese el­e­ments of­fers an op­por­tu­nity for a spon­sor to add value and ini­ti­ate a con­struc­tive di­a­logue with in­di­vid­u­als sup­port­ing the many events that make up the Vodacom Dur­ban July each year.’’

The nom­i­na­tion is one of four for Vodacom, with the other short­list­ing com­ing in the cat­e­gories for Vodacom Bul­letjies Rugby (Sport Par­tic­i­pa­tion Event of the Year), Vodacom Su­peRugby 2014 (Best Spon­sor­ship of a Sport Event or Com­pe­ti­tion), and the Vodacom Rugby Stats App (Best Use of Dig­i­tal Com­mu­ni­ca­tions in Sport).

Gan­gulu added: “I would like to thank ev­ery­one in­volved in the event from the var­i­ous de­part­ments to our spon­sor­ship agency, Trinergy Brand Con­nec­tors, for all their hard work.’’

The win­ners will be an­nounced at the Dis­cov­ery Sport In­dus­try Award ban­quet at the Sand­ton Con­ven­tion Cen­tre on 12th Fe­bru­ary 2015.
