THE horseracing industry is toasting the inclusion of the Vodacom Durban July as a nominee for the Best Sponsorship of a Sport Event or Competition award at the annual Discovery Sport Industry Awards.

The 118th running of the Vodacom Durban July on 5 July 2014, an event that is widely recognised as Africa's Greatest Horseracing Event, was another sell-out success, entrenching its status as one of the household names in South African sporting and social circles.

The event, presented by Vodacom and Gold Circle, seeks to stay fresh and contemporary each year while at the same time staying true to its history and the deeplyrooted traditions of horseracing.

The event has succeeded in evolving in recent years into a vibrant and unique sporting and social event that draws its support from a complete cross section of South African communities, with an increasing percentage of raceday fans travelling from outside of KwaZulu-Natal to enjoy the annual spectacle.

“The Vodacom Durban July is a pivotal event for Gold Circle and the horse racing industry in South Africa,’’ said Gold Circle chairman Robert Mauvis.

“With ever increasing competition for the attention of sport fans, each event and sporting code has to look to itself to find new ways to remain attractive and vibrant and stand out from the crowd.

“The partnership between Vodacom and its agency Trinergy and Gold Circle has been able to do this very successfully and the event remains as captivating as it was when it was first run in 1897.’’

Vodacom's Brand Manager-Sponsorship & Regional Marketing, Owen Gangulu, said: “Vodacom sought new and innovative ways to connect with its market through the Vodacom Durban July.

“It is an exhilarating property to sponsor as it’s speaks at numerous levels to a national and international audience following the sporting, social and fashion dimensions of this event. Each of these elements offers an opportunity for a sponsor to add value and initiate a constructive dialogue with individuals supporting the many events that make up the Vodacom Durban July each year.’’

The nomination is one of four for Vodacom, with the other shortlisting coming in the categories for Vodacom Bulletjies Rugby (Sport Participation Event of the Year), Vodacom SupeRugby 2014 (Best Sponsorship of a Sport Event or Competition), and the Vodacom Rugby Stats App (Best Use of Digital Communications in Sport).

Gangulu added: “I would like to thank everyone involved in the event from the various departments to our sponsorship agency, Trinergy Brand Connectors, for all their hard work.’’

The winners will be announced at the Discovery Sport Industry Award banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre on 12th February 2015.
