Scientists testing key to longevity

-

LONDON: An “anti-ageing pill” which could allow people to live to 120 is being developed in Russia, researchers say.

Scientists are testing the drug – which they say delayed the start of the ageing process – on rats, mice, fish and dogs.

Dr Maxim Skulachev, of Moscow State University, said: “A lot of ageing diseases developed much slower.”

His team was using “a new type of antioxidant” to target the energyproducing mitochondria in cells which are linked to ageing and potentially diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Skulachev told Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets yesterday that a “realistic” aim for the human life span was about 120 years.

“It will be possible to postpone old age,” he said. – Daily Mail
