Vi­o­lent crimes mar start of the new year

IT WAS a bloody start to the new year in Gaut­eng, with sev­eral shootouts and rob­beries leav­ing at least four peo­ple dead and sev­eral in­jured.

Yes­ter­day, Gaut­eng po­lice spokesper­son Lieu­tenant-Colonel Lun­gelo Dlamini an­nounced that po­lice had launched a man­hunt for a group of two to four men in­volved in sev­eral crimes over the New Year week­end in Olieven­hout­bosch, Cen­tu­rion.

This fol­lows the mur­der of a two-year-old child who was shot and killed dur­ing a rob­bery on New Year’s Eve.

“Af­ter shoot­ing the child, the sus­pects robbed the parents of cell­phones and cash, and the father was then shot. He is in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion,” Dlamini said.

In sep­a­rate in­ci­dents on the same night, four peo­ple were shot and wounded dur­ing a house rob­bery and at­tempted hi­jack­ing.

The group are also be­lieved to be in­volved in a busi­ness rob­bery in the area where the owner and his son were held at gun­point while cash, cig­a­rettes and gro­ceries were stolen.

In an­other in­ci­dent on New Year’s Eve, a 14-year-old boy was killed dur­ing a house rob­bery in Cyrildene, Joburg.

Dlamini said four armed men were wait­ing out­side when the fam­ily re­turned to the house.

“The 49-year-old owner was forced in­side at gun­point and taken into the bed­room, where the men de­manded di­a­monds, money and jew­ellery. Dur­ing the rob­bery, a 14-year-old boy was shot and crit­i­cally wounded. The sus­pects then ran­sacked the house and stole cell­phones, lap­tops, cash and a car,” Dlamini said.

No ar­rests had been made but po­lice were fol­low­ing sev­eral leads to iden­tify sus­pects.

On Sun­day night, a shootout in Cosmo City left a man dead and two oth­ers wounded fol­low­ing an ar­gu­ment with a group of men over the vic­tim’s sis­ter.

“Two of the vic­tims, the one who died and an­other who was in­jured, were the woman’s broth­ers. The other vic­tim was the friend,” Dlamini said.

A man was also stabbed to death on Sun­day morn­ing near a petrol sta­tion in Honey­dew.

ER24 spokesper­son Rus­sel Meir­ing said paramedics were called to the scene af­ter a mem­ber of the pub­lic no­ticed the man ly­ing on the side­walk in a pool of blood.

“The man was as­sessed and found to have sus­tained nu­mer­ous stab wounds and showed no signs of life. He was de­clared dead at the scene,” Meir­ing said.
