Violent crimes mar start of the new year
IT WAS a bloody start to the new year in Gauteng, with several shootouts and robberies leaving at least four people dead and several injured.
Yesterday, Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini announced that police had launched a manhunt for a group of two to four men involved in several crimes over the New Year weekend in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion.
This follows the murder of a two-year-old child who was shot and killed during a robbery on New Year’s Eve.
“After shooting the child, the suspects robbed the parents of cellphones and cash, and the father was then shot. He is in a critical condition,” Dlamini said.
In separate incidents on the same night, four people were shot and wounded during a house robbery and attempted hijacking.
The group are also believed to be involved in a business robbery in the area where the owner and his son were held at gunpoint while cash, cigarettes and groceries were stolen.
In another incident on New Year’s Eve, a 14-year-old boy was killed during a house robbery in Cyrildene, Joburg.
Dlamini said four armed men were waiting outside when the family returned to the house.
“The 49-year-old owner was forced inside at gunpoint and taken into the bedroom, where the men demanded diamonds, money and jewellery. During the robbery, a 14-year-old boy was shot and critically wounded. The suspects then ransacked the house and stole cellphones, laptops, cash and a car,” Dlamini said.
No arrests had been made but police were following several leads to identify suspects.
On Sunday night, a shootout in Cosmo City left a man dead and two others wounded following an argument with a group of men over the victim’s sister.
“Two of the victims, the one who died and another who was injured, were the woman’s brothers. The other victim was the friend,” Dlamini said.
A man was also stabbed to death on Sunday morning near a petrol station in Honeydew.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics were called to the scene after a member of the public noticed the man lying on the sidewalk in a pool of blood.
“The man was assessed and found to have sustained numerous stab wounds and showed no signs of life. He was declared dead at the scene,” Meiring said.
