Man held for attempted murder
A 21-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in the Joburg CBD for attempted murder, police said yesterday. Spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele, who is stationed at Johannesburg Central police station, said that on New Year’s Eve the suspect allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old man using bricks from a pavement at the corner of Anderson and Alexander streets. “The suspect confronted the victim, who was walking underneath a bridge. He assaulted him with bricks until he was unconscious and then robbed him of his cellphone,” said Mbele. Community members made a citizen’s arrest and called the police. The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital. The suspect will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
