MOSCOW: The first hearing of the Constitutional Court of South Korea on the legitimacy of President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment ended in just nine minutes after it kicked off yesterday as the president did not appear before the court.

The second hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, and in case Park fails to show up again, the trial will be held through a proxy, court president Park Han-chul said.

The South Korean parliament decided to impeach the president on December 9 after it transpired her friend, Choi Soon-sil, who holds no posts in the government, possibly used her ties to Park for financial benefit.
