The Star Early Edition - - WORLD -

GENEVA: The number of media workers killed in 2016 rose to 156 in 33 countries, the Geneva-based Press Emblem Campaign has said.

The figure of 156 is the highest number in 10 years and an increase of 15 percent compared to 2015, it said. The figure includes the nine Russian journalists killed in a plane crash in the Black Sea on December 25 on their way to Syria to report on the conflict. The war in Syria has already claimed the lives of more than 110 journalists since 2012.

This figure does not cover the journalists who disappeared or those still in detention. – Xinhua
