Escape bid ends in Zoo Lake drowning
A 23-YEAR-OLD housebreaking suspect drowned in Joburg’s Zoo Lake after managing to escape from Parkview police station yesterday.
The man had been nabbed yesterday at about 4am on suspicion of robbery and theft and taken to the police station.
He apparently broke free from the security guards who had brought him and another suspect to the police station and escaped.
A police officer who gave chase fell and injured himself.
But with other police officers hot on his heels, the man allegedly jumped into Zoo Lake, where he subsequently drowned.
According to police spokesperson Captain Richard Munyai, two men were involved in a housebreaking in Greenside.
Munyai said the men were found with the batteries from the property’s remote-controlled gate.
“They had managed to open the gate. It’s unclear if they intended to just steal the batteries or if they were heading into the house,” Munyai said.
The suspects were apprehended by security guards and brought to the police station, where one of them escaped and the chase ensued.
“The officer who was injured in pursuit sustained minor injuries on his right hand and leg,” Munyai said.
Police said the inhabitants of the home were not injured in the attempted break-in.
The other suspect remained in custody and the death of the suspect would be referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation, Munyai said.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said they were aware of the drowning and were letting the police deal with the matter.
Moodley also warned about participating in certain activities in the lake.
“We would like to advise users that the lake after de-silting (when debris and sand are carried by moving or running water and deposited as a sediment) can be dangerous. Swimming or fishing is illegal and can prove fatal,” she added.
The suspect’s name cannot be revealed until his family have been notified of his death.
