FORT LAUD­ERDALE: The 26-yearold Iraq war vet­eran ac­cused of killing five peo­ple at a busy Florida air­port in the lat­est US gun ram­page was to ap­pear in a fed­eral court yes­ter­day on charges that could bring him the death penalty.

Este­ban San­ti­ago, who had a his­tory of er­ratic be­hav­iour, has ad­mit­ted to in­ves­ti­ga­tors he planned Fri­day’s at­tack in Fort Laud­erdale and bought a one-way ticket from his home in Alaska to carry it out.

Au­thor­i­ties have not ruled out ter­ror­ism and are also prob­ing men­tal ill­ness.
