US bans Russians

The Star Early Edition - - WORLD -

THE OBAMA administration has added five more Russians, including a senior government official, to a list of people who are banned from travelling to the US and subject to asset freezes for human rights abuses.

The new sanctions were imposed under a 2012 law passed by Congress and named after Sergei Magnitsky, a whistle-blower who died after spending a year in pre-trial detention for revealing tax fraud by Russian officials.

The Kremlin described the sanctions as extra step towards the degradation of bilateral relations. Sputnik and Washington Post
