Government in bid to save poultry jobs
THE GOVERNMENT was working with chicken producers to deal with job losses in the poultry industry, the Department of Trade and Industry’s deputy directorgeneral, Xolelwa MlumbiPeter, said yesterday. This follows an outcry from the South Africa poultry industry about the impact of chicken imports, which it has argued put thousands of jobs on the line. Mlumbi-Peter said the government was implementing “measures to curb the level of damage”. Amid these concerns, RCL Foods’ shares fell 6.92 percent yesterday to R12.10. RCL has strongly criticised imports. Meanwhile, Astral Foods fell 0.42 percent to R138.72.
