Gov­ern­ment in bid to save poul­try jobs

THE GOV­ERN­MENT was work­ing with chicken pro­duc­ers to deal with job losses in the poul­try in­dus­try, the Depart­ment of Trade and In­dus­try’s deputy di­rec­tor­gen­eral, Xolelwa MlumbiPeter, said yes­ter­day. This fol­lows an out­cry from the South Africa poul­try in­dus­try about the im­pact of chicken im­ports, which it has ar­gued put thou­sands of jobs on the line. Mlumbi-Peter said the gov­ern­ment was im­ple­ment­ing “mea­sures to curb the level of dam­age”. Amid th­ese con­cerns, RCL Foods’ shares fell 6.92 per­cent yes­ter­day to R12.10. RCL has strongly crit­i­cised im­ports. Mean­while, As­tral Foods fell 0.42 per­cent to R138.72.
