STAR KEEPS ON RISING
PEARL THUSI undoubtedly had a better 2016 than many other people.
She landed a role in American television series Quantico making her star rise even higher.
The talented mother of one is not new to the acting scene as she has had several roles in shows such as Isidingo, Zone 14, Rhythm City, Soul City and feature film Kalushi: The Solomon Mahlangu Story, here at home.
She didn’t know what to expect when she first started shooting scenes with the likes of Blair Underwood and Priyanka Chopra for the second season of Quantico.
“Everyone is so down-toearth and personable. There are absolutely no egos or weird vibes, it’s relaxed but extremely professional,” she said.
Thusi said the experience of working with a large professional group of people has contributed a lot to her career and her self-esteem as there is so much to learn.
“Everyone just wants to have a relaxed and good time at work and go home. There’s no hiding in trailers – everyone is supportive and really invested in making sure the story works and the characters are well-rounded and believable.”
Her character on the show, Dayana Mampasi, is a lawyer who struggles to fit in. She said she was excited to see what happens to her character as the season rolls out and what it will mean for other actors from South Africa.
“I feel like I’ve grown immeasurably. I hope that we receive and also create more opportunities like this as a collective.”
Living and working in America was quite an adjustment for the actress. But, even though she misses being at home, she has realised just how much bigger the world is and that there is so much to take advantage of.
She also said she felt fulfilled being overseas.
“I had some teething problems, but I am having an amazing time. New York is such an incredibly diverse and magical place with lots of vibrancy and energy. It feels like home.
“South Africa is just a microcosm of what the world has to offer.”
She also said competition was “insane” in the US and this has propelled her to work that much harder and maintain a good work ethic.
Thusi has made many connections through people from home while living in New York.
She believes in the power of word of mouth and has made sure to always respect people. “There is so much we can take advantage of out there if we just work hard and keep believing.”
In 2016 Thusi experienced many extremes, learning that every high has a low and vice versa.
“You must have the one to appreciate the other, and that’s okay. We always nod to the theory of this but it always feels brand new when experience teaches you again.”
This year, Thusi hopes to achieve all that is meant for her. She has a plan, something she always makes sure she has in place, but she also knows anything can happen.
“As I’ve come to learn, sometimes something greater is what I’m meant to achieve. I hope to find that out and be prepared for it.”
LEARNING CURVE: Pearl Thusi is ready for anything, now that she has succeeded overseas.
