20 pupils hurt on Gaut­eng roads

A DAY af­ter four school­child­ren were killed in a hor­rific crash near Dur­ban, 15 chil­dren were in­jured in a sep­a­rate taxi ac­ci­dent while on their way to school in Midrand yes­ter­day.

Emer-G-Med spokesper­son Maxwell Co­hen said the ac­ci­dent oc­curred just af­ter 7am on the cor­ner of Richards and Church roads in Midrand.

“The 15 schoolkids, all aged around seven, sus­tained in­juries rang­ing from mi­nor to mod­er­ate.

“When paramedics ar­rived, some of the chil­dren were found walk­ing around the scene, while oth­ers were sit­ting on the pave­ment and in the ve­hi­cle,” he said.

They were triaged and treated at the scene be­fore be­ing taken to var­i­ous nearby hos­pi­tals for fur­ther care.

In a sep­a­rate in­ci­dent, also yes­ter­day morn­ing, five school­child­ren sus­tained in­juries af­ter a col­li­sion in­volv­ing a bakkie and school trans­port ve­hi­cle on the cor­ner of Rooi­huiskraal and Ruimte roads in Centurion.

“The cause of the col­li­sion is un­known and will be in­ves­ti­gated by lo­cal au­thor­i­ties,” Co­hen added.

On Wed­nes­day, a taxi col­lided with a bus in early morn­ing traf­fic, killing four chil­dren and in­jur­ing 17, in Ntuzuma town­ship, north of Dur­ban.
