Dementia sufferer from senior citizens’ home is still missing
FOR FOUR days, 76-year-old Solomon Gabriel Oliphant has been missing from a home for the elderly where he lives.
Oliphant (pictured), who also responds to the name Mike and suffers from dementia, has been living at the home for the past three months.
He left the Andries Meyer Home just after supper on Monday and he has not been seen since.
The centre’s manager, Charlotte Bosman, said she was notified by staff members that after the meal on Monday evening, Oliphant did not want to get ready for bed.
“We normally give the elderly people their meal around 4.30pm. At 5pm we give them their medicines and they get ready for bed. Mr Oliphant apparently refused to get ready for bed and was left in the communal dining and TV room while staff attended to other residents,” Bosman said.
There was also a shift change for the day and night staff at that time, she added.
After the night staff began doing their rounds, a nursing assistant realised that Oliphant was missing.
“We then notified the police and his family of his disappearance,” Bosman said.
She insists, however, that their government-funded home is secure.
It is unclear what Oliphant was wearing at the time.
His daughter Glenda August said she was optimistic that her father would be found.
“I trust that we will find him. With dementia he has become like a child again. So he’s very energetic.
“But he’s also very friendly, so that will increase the chances of him chatting to people and eventually someone helping him get home,” August said.
Eldorado Park police spokesperson Captain Phillemon Khorombi said the police were aware that Oliphant was missing and were following all leads.
“We also like to appeal to the public to notify Eldorado Park police station if they see or have any information on his whereabouts,” Khorombi said.
The Department of Social Development said it was also investigating Oliphant’s disappearance.
DISAPPEARED: Mike Oliphant, 76, a resident of the Andries Meyer Home for the Aged in Eldorado Park, left the home on Monday night and has not been seen since. He has dementia.
