Cellphone firms, minister clash

The Star Early Edition - - LETTERS -

LEGISLATORS have summoned cellphone network operators and the regulator, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) over the announcement and withdrawal of data price hikes. Potraz and the three operators – Econet Wireless, NetOne and Telecel Zimbabwe – will appear before parliament on January 23. Last week, Supa Mandiwanzira, minister in charge of communications, was involved in a public spat with operators, particularly Econet, over voice and data tariff hikes. This was after all three cellphone operators in the country said the price hikes were a directive from Potraz, which set the floor prices. Amid the debacle Mandiwanzira reversed the price hikes and suggested that a refund for users be paid by the operators. – ANA
