Shark mauls diver

The Star Early Edition - - WORLD -

SYDNEY: An Australian scuba diver, 55, mauled by a shark on the northern-most section of the Great Barrier Reef, had to wait more than eight hours for treatment.

He was captain of a diving boat and is now in hospital on Thursday Island in a stable condition.

The attack came at midday on Saturday in a remote area off the coast of Queensland, near Murray Island in the Torres Strait.

The man suffered several significant bites and lacerations to the abdomen, chest and hand in the shark attack and lost a lot of blood.

The diver was then dragged on board the diving boat and received first aid, before being transported to Murray Island, where a rescue helicopter moved him to Thursday Island, after initially having to turn back due to storms. – dpa
