DO­MES­TIC maize stocks had dropped 20 per­cent from a year ago at the end of De­cem­ber, the SA Grain In­for­ma­tion Ser­vice said on its on web­site yes­ter­day.

The coun­try had 3.12 mil­lion tons of maize stocks at the end of last month, com­pared with 3.91 mil­lion tons a year ear­lier.

The stocks in­cluded 1.52 mil­lion tons of yel­low maize and 1.6 mil­lion tons of the white va­ri­ety.

Mean­while, wheat for de­liv­ery in March lost 0.8 per­cent to $4.23 a bushel (R2 084 a ton) on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Maize for same de­liv­ery month de­clined 0.5 per­cent to $3.61 a bushel. Prices reached one-week low. – Bloomberg
