Di­a­mond sales soar by 80%

BOTSWANA’S state-owned Oka­vango Di­a­mond Com­pany (ODC) sales jumped 80 per­cent to $547 mil­lion (R7.4 bil­lion) in 2016 as global con­sumer de­mand re­bounded, its deputy man­ag­ing di­rec­tor said yes­ter­day. Mar­cus ter Haar said over­all vol­umes also rose by 115 per­cent to 3.44 mil­lion carats af­ter ac­count­ing for var­i­ous post sale-ad­just­ments through the year. While sales were sig­nif­i­cantly higher in 2016, av­er­age price per carat weak­ened to $158.78 from $183.78 in 2015, he said. “The fall in av­er­age price per carat is at­trib­ut­able to the mix of di­a­monds sold.” – Reuters
