DRAPED in warm hues of cream and purple, the Coelopleurus

exquisitus urchin is a dazzling ocean creature. But, marine biologists did not discover it by exploring the open sea. Instead they found it on eBay.

The Natural History Museum in London determined that a specimen being sold on eBay by a specialised collector did hail from a species previously unknown to science.

The collector offered it at a starting price of $9.50 (about R124). It sold for $138 (about R1800) – which just goes to show that you won’t get rich selling to science. – Auctions Writer
