Xolobeni residents don’t want it
XOLOBENI residence said their pleas to stop mining in their pristine dunes have fallen on deaf ears after Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane passed an 18 month moratorium on the application and the prohibition of the lodging of any further application for mining of the area. Nonhle Mbuthuma, a resident in the rural town on the Wild Coast and spokesperson for Amadiba Crisis committee said that the community was strongly opposed to the proposed titanium mine. “We thought that the moratorium was passed last year, but it seems that the minister was only considering the moratorium last year,” Mbuthuma said. “The moratorium means nothing to us. We do not want an 18 month moratorium, we want a complete halt on mining,” added Mbuthuma. Zwane said the moratorium was passed after taking into consideration the social and political climate.
