SOCHI, RUSSIA: World champions Germany had a winning start to their Fifa Confederations Cup campaign yesterday, with a largely youthful and inexperienced team defeating Australia 3-2. Lars Stindl and Leon Goretzka,

got their first Germany goals and captain Julian Draxler converted a penalty; while Tommy Rogic and Tomi Juric were on target for the Asian champions Australia. Germany wasted a host of chances in the first half and were also sloppy at times in defence, while goalkeeper Bernd Leno did not always look comfortable. Australia, meanwhile, improved as the game progressed. After the victory, Germany are second on goal difference in Group B behind Copa America winners Chile, who beat Cameroon 2-0 on Sunday. – dpa; Picture: Reuters
