Eight die in Burundi grenade attack on pub
BUJUMBURA: Eight people have been killed and another 50 injured in a grenade attack carried out on Sunday night by unknown persons in a pub on the Shinya Zone, Garatara Commune, in the province of Kayanza, in central Burundi.
Witnesses said six of the victims died at the scene, while two more people died in hospital.
The Administrator of the commune, Dévote Ndayizeye, said it was not known who was responsible for the attack. It was one of the worst attacks on civilians since the outbreak of the political crisis in 2015, when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term in office.
Human rights bodies have reported that more than 1 200 people have been killed in political violence since then.
Nkurunziza’s regime has accused those opposed to his third term of being “terrorists”.
