IT’S OFFICIAL: LUKAKU IS A RED DEVIL
LONDON: Manchester United completed the signing of striker Romelu Lukaku on a fiveyear contract yesterday.
The deal for the 24-year-old Belgium international, which includes an option for a sixth season, comes two days after United announced a transfer agreement with Everton.
United didn’t disclose the fee, but British media reported it to be an initial £75 million (about R103m) with another £15m possible in add-ons.
Lukaku was the Premier League’s secondtop scorer last season with 25 goals.
The move reunites him with United manager Jose Mourinho, who was Chelsea boss when they sold him to Everton for £28m in 2014.
“Romelu is a natural fit for Manchester United,” Mourinho said on the club’s website. “He is a big personality and a big player. It is only natural that he wants to develop his career at the biggest club. He will be a great addition to the group and I know they will make him very welcome.
“I am really looking forward to working with him again.”
Lukaku scored 87 goals for Everton but turned down the most lucrative contract in club history back in March.
The signing comes one day after Wayne Rooney left United for former club Everton, though the moves weren’t connected. – dpa
