Online sale was a wash-out

USERS of online classified sites, beware. If you’re trying to sell items, insist on cash upfront or that the money be reflected in your account before you hand over anything (and insist on meeting at a neutral place so crooks don’t have your address).

A reader tried to sell an unwanted washing machine on Gumtree and received an overly eager response from a “Sandra”, who was quite happy to deposit money and collect the machine right away. Proof of payment via SMS (later refuted by Nedbank) was promptly sent but the reader had insisted on cash on collection or that the money must reflect beforehand.

Three days later, when the money still wasn’t reflecting, she messaged “Sandra”, who then claimed she had reversed the EFT because she didn’t trust the deal. Note: Banks don’t allow you to “reverse” an EFT without agreement from both parties.
