AU needs cash for peace

The Star Early Edition - - WORLD -

THE AU has told the UN that financial resource gaps are among the major challenging situations facing Africa in its efforts to ensure peace and stability on the continent.

Smail Chergui, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that conflict prevention remains the most cost effective conflict management tools but yet the least resourced. Chergui has called for more strengthened co-operation with the UN on peace and security on the continent.

Over the past decade, the AU has authorised the deployment of more than 100 000 uniformed and civilian peacekeeping personnel. Xinhua
