The Star Early Edition - - MOTORING - JESSE ADAMS

VOLKSWAGEN has updated its Golf R to facelifted 7.5 spec, added some more power, and thrown a few extra standard features into the deal. And it’s also finally made the high-performance turbodiesel Golf GTD, that’s been sold overseas since 2010, available in our market.

Like the new GTI which was launched in May, the Golf R now gets the same slight exterior revisions, which include new bumpers and standard LED head- and tail-lights. For good measure the R also comes with new 19” ‘Spielberg’ or ‘Pretoria’ wheel designs and the quad tailpipes have been moved further toward the outer edges of the back bumper.

Also noteworthy is a bigger 20.3cm touchscreen infotainment system, which can be upgraded to the flagship 23.4cm Discover Pro navigation unit with gesture control for another R22 000.

More powerful new Golf R now rocks the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.6 seconds.
