Fewer S Sudanese fleeing to Uganda
KAMPALA: The number of South Sudanese refugees fleeing to neighbouring Uganda has fallen despite continued fighting back home.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the number went down last month to over 600 from the 2 000 recorded daily several months ago. The UNHCR’s Katherine Wainwright attributed the drop to the rainy season.
“Almost everyone travels through the bush. This becomes more difficult in the rainy season.”
The other factor was reported to be less fighting near the border.
Wainwright said fewer people were fleeing, but the refugees were still in dire need of humanitarian help. In the next few days, the number of South Sudan refugees who have crossed to Uganda will hit 1 million. – Xinhua
