Putin agrees Syria base

The Star Early Edition - - WORLD -

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has ratified an agreement on the deployment of a Russian combat air group in Syria.

The protocol regulates the group’s deployment, its portable and stationary property and its work on Syria’s territory.

The protocol implies changes to the terms of the air group’s presence at the base, curbing it to 49 years. The document stipulates an automatic extension of the term for 25 years.

The previous protocol was for an indefinite period of time, allowing use of the base “free-of-charge” and letting in equipment and ammunition without customs or other duties. Sputnik
