US show of force over Korean peninsula
THE US pointedly showed off its military prowess over the Pacific and the Korean Peninsula on Sunday, in response to North Korea’s launch on Friday of a missile capable of reaching the US mainland, a test Pyongyang said was a “stern warning” for Washington to back off.
The US flew two supersonic B-1 bombers over the Korean Peninsula as part of a joint exercise with Japan and South Korea. And US forces conducted a missile defence test over the Pacific, sending aloft a medium-range ballistic missile that it tracked and intercepted.
Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, retweeted a photo of the bomber drills and wrote: “Done talking about NKorea. China is aware they must act. Japan & SKorea must inc pressure. Not only a US problem.” Washington Post
