Crime clampdown nets 274

A TOTAL of 274 suspects were arrested for various crimes during crime prevention operations in the Uitenhage cluster over the weekend, Eastern Cape police said yesterday. “The arrests included two for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, one for attempted burglary, 13 for driving under the influence of liquor and 38 for the illegal possession of drugs,” said spokespers­on Gerda Swart. A total of 61 traffic fines had been issued, amounting to more than R30 500. The other suspects were arrested on charges related to the possession of housebreak­ing implements, burglary, contravent­ion of a court order, fraud, theft and reckless driving. “Police will continue to combat crime effectivel­y in the Uitenhage cluster,” Swart said. “The SAPS appeals to the community to work with it to reduce crime by providing valuable informatio­n that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.” – ANA
