Women elected to Somali parliament

-

AS SOMALI elections enter their final stages, more women are being elected to the House of the People as the country’s federal states attempt to meet the 30 percent gender rule.

Three candidates were elected to the House in the past two days in Jowhar, Baidoa and Cadaado.

In Jowhar, Fatuma Farah Ibrahim, a first-timer in politics was elected on Saturday, becoming the tenth woman to get the nod to represent the state of HirShabelle. “We had to fill only nine seats to attain the quota for women. We had to work really hard for them. We now have 10 women, which means, we have surpassed the quota. We request other regional administrations fulfill their quota,” said election monitor Amina Abdullahi Derow Derow.
