It’s Maimane’s ‘Rubicon’ moment
NEVER before has Mmusi Maimane, as leader of the DA, had such an opportune moment to radicalise the DA into a problack political organisation.
The racially insensitive tweet by Helen has created fertile ground for Maimane to assert his leadership and demonstrate that the DA is a truly transformed political organisation that takes to heart the concerns of the black majority.
If he were to deal with Helen decisively and fire her from the DA, he would win favour with the doubtful black masses of the country. Such an action would validate the authenticity of his leadership and credibility of the DA’s stance on racism and white supremacy and privilege.
However, such a decision would also see the DA fragment along the a black and white line, where pro-Zille supporters would exit the party and the DA would cease to exist as we know it.
Maimane would find him- self leading a truly pro-black DA whose credibility would be a formidable force to contest head to head with the ANC in the 2019 national elections.
Maimane has the opportunity to transform the political landscape in South Africa, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain the confidence of the black majority.
The question is, is he the leader he needs to be at this pivotal moment? Setota Ramoshebi
