Tiny island vanishes

The Sunday Independent - - FRONT PAGE - | Listverse.com

JAPANESE officials have recently noticed that one of the country’s islands off the north-east coast has vanished. The tiny island was called Esanbe Hanakita Kojima. It was uninhabited and was likely eroded by wind and drift ice from the Sea of Okhotsk. Normally, such a disappearance would be unimportant, but the outlying islet had some value as it was used to delineate Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The Japanese coast guard last surveyed the island in 1987.
