URINE CREATES BIO-BRICK
THE world’s first bio-brick grown from human urine was produced by civil engineering master’s student, Suzanna Lambert, UCT announced recently. The research is funded by the Water Research Commission and aims at rethinking the way in which waste is treated and to create more sustainable management systems, said Dr Dyllon Randall, Lambert’s supervisor.
“It’s taking something that we typically consider waste, so urine for example, and viewing it as a resource that we can extract things from,’’ said Randall.
The bio-brick is created in a similar way to the formation of coral and shells.
