Amazon has bought the global television rights to The Lord of the Rings for an undisclosed sum. It will produce a multiseason series with storylines preceding author JRR Tolkien’s famed fantasy trilogy.

Its first few streamed series won critical acclaim but not subscribers, so Amazon now wants a hit like HBO’s Game of Thrones.
