Two pupils expelled after attack video goes viral
TWO Durban pupils who repeatedly beat a junior pupil in a boarding establishment, and filmed it, have been expelled.
The girls, who attended Vukuzakhe Secondary School in Umlazi, have also been told that no school will enrol them for their matric year until 2016.
The horrific incident went viral on Facebook.
While the incident occurred in September last year, its contents only became known to authorities last week.
KZN Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said: “When we heard about the incident we immediately instructed a team to go there. There was a tribunal yesterday [ Tuesday] and it was recommended that the two pupils that did the beating be expelled from the school. The child that took the video has been suspended,” said Mahlambi.
He said the department was appalled by the incident.
“This is a form of violence and we will not tolerate it. In the past, pupils have died and some left paralysed from incidences like this.”
He said this type of incident can “create division in a community”.
This is the second school bullying video to go online this year.
In the Northern Cape, four pupils from the Jan Kempdorp High School faced charges of rape and assault after a black pupil was violated by the four white pupils with a broomstick. The incident was filmed. * additional reporting by Jonathan Erasmus.
