Gym’s rule on racism wel­comed

JO­HAN­NES­BURG — The SA Hu­man Rights Com­mis­sion yes­ter­day wel­comed an amend­ment to the rules of a Jo­han­nes­burg gym, pro­hibit­ing racism.

“The gym’s rules now specif­i­cally pro­hibit racism, as well as dis­crim­i­na­tory lan­guage based on, among other grounds, sex, gen­der and so­cial ori­gin,” said spokesper­son Isaac Man­gena.

The amend­ment was made by the Bed­ford­view Planet Fit­ness af­ter one of its mem­bers called Ntokozo Lwan­dle a “k**** r”.

“This amend­ment will now be made in all Planet Fit­ness gym rules. It sig­nals an im­por­tant step in the right di­rec­tion by pri­vate busi­ness in re­spect­ing and pro­mot­ing hu­man rights.”

Although the mem­ber who used the racial slur could not be found, the gym amended its rules af­ter dis­cus­sions with the com­mis­sion.
