Gym’s rule on racism welcomed
JOHANNESBURG — The SA Human Rights Commission yesterday welcomed an amendment to the rules of a Johannesburg gym, prohibiting racism.
“The gym’s rules now specifically prohibit racism, as well as discriminatory language based on, among other grounds, sex, gender and social origin,” said spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
The amendment was made by the Bedfordview Planet Fitness after one of its members called Ntokozo Lwandle a “k**** r”.
“This amendment will now be made in all Planet Fitness gym rules. It signals an important step in the right direction by private business in respecting and promoting human rights.”
Although the member who used the racial slur could not be found, the gym amended its rules after discussions with the commission.
