THE Nissan Tiida has impressed the Yanks with its frugality. In the 2015 AAA Green Car Guide Category Winners, the Tiida — which is sold as the Versa in the U.S. — took two top spots in the Best Value Cost-Per-Point Scores, all of which were petrol models. They were:

1. 2014 Nissan Versa SV

2. 2014 Nissan Versa Note SV

3. 2013 Hyundai Accent GLS

4. 2015 Toyota Yaris LE

5. 2014 Kia Soul+

The first placed Versa SV was $27 (R320) cheaper to run than the fifth placed Kia Soul+. Engineers and technicians with more than 100 years combined experience evaluated the vehicles. Each category was scored on 0-10 points. Scores were totalled to determine top vehicles. Then, each vehicle’s total score was divided by its “as-tested” price to determine its cost per point for best value. The guide lists vehicle specifications, test scores, data and observations in one-page summaries. Tested vehicles were selected based on emission certifications from the California Air Resources Board and U.S. EPA fuel economy ratings.

Tests were performed at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana and on Southern California roads by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the EPA and the Auto Club.
